Suddenly, their customer base expanded overnight. As the software interface for these transactions, Register changed this, providing a convenient way for these businesses to accept credit cards. These merchants were missing out on sales – customers who didn’t have cash couldn’t purchase from them. Maybe they didn’t have large enough transactions to afford the fees charged by other POS companies. Maybe they were always on the go and needed something mobile. Square realized there was a segment of small businesses and individuals who couldn’t accept credit cards. So what role does Square Register play, and why is it such a great product? To do this, the company has created an ecosystem of complimentary products: Square Register, Square Wallet (the consumer app for making payments / tracking purchases), and the Square Stand/Reader (these are substitutes for each other as credit card readers). Square’s vision is making payments as easy as possible. Although the friendly service helps, it’s the Square Register iPad app (which serves as a point-of-sale system for businesses) that makes the checkout process easy, simple and maybe even a little fun. So why is it that I came to have such positive feelings about an app designed to take money from me? Yes, it’s mostly due to the unbelievably good fried chicken and donuts they serve, but strangely, I actually look forward to paying for my food when I’m there. I get a strange feeling of excitement whenever I walk into Federal Donuts in Philadelphia, PA. Bringing happiness to customers, 1 donut at a time (photo by Danya Henninger)
